Kelly Slater Wins 2011 US Open of Surfing

The all important Quarter-final of the 2011 US Open of Surfing where Kelly Slater defeated Taj Burrow 15.50 to 15.27. So close … yet so far.

Probably my most ‘intimate’ video ever made, some really high quality amazing barrel footage captured on my GoPro Surf Hero HD. Featuring multiple angles including some of the same waves being captured from land on my Panasonic HD camcorder. These clips were taken in different sessions over the 2010 Indo season, the bulk of it while surf guiding at G-Land Bobby’s Surf Camp and a few at Padang Padang, Bali. I know it sounds long at just over 5mins but don’t be put off, it certainly doesn’t seem very long at all when you watch it. I put countless hours into editing and getting this clip rendered so I hope you enjoy

Carrissa Moore has become the youngest women ever to win the World Title.

The world’s best surfers have descended on the small Victorian town of Torquay for the second stop on the 2011 ASP World Title season.

Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion and defending four-time Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach winner, celebrated the historic spirit of the event at today’s press conference, recounting his childhood memories of Bells.

“As a kid in the States I saw a lot of film of this event,” Slater said. “I got an idea of what the wave was like and that it was like surfing in an arena. I thought of it like two gladiators battling with fans watching from the cliffs. I remember watching Tom Curren and Occy’s (Mark Occhilupo heats, and I couldn’t wait to come here.”

Slater responded to queries regarding his campaign for an 11th ASP World Title in characteristic fashion.

“If I wasn’t hungry to win an 11th ASP World Title, then I wouldn’t be here,” Slater said.

Slater will take on Kai Otton (AUS), 31, and Championship Moves Trials winner Adam Robertson in Round 1 of competition.

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and defending three-time Rip Curl Women’s Bells Beach winner, who opened the 2011 season with an uncharacteristic Quarterfinal loss at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast, knows she’s got a challenge on her hands for the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title.

“I fell behind on the Gold Coast and I’ve got some work to do to catch-up,” Gilmore said. “I have always really enjoyed my time here at Bells Beach. I’ve had some great results here, but it’s going to be a hard task to get that Bell again. I’m just really excited because the forecast looks fantastic.”

Gilmore will face Courtney Conlogue (AUS), 18, and Alana Blanchard (HAW), 20, in the opening round of competition.

Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, current No. 2 in the hunt for the 2011 ASP World Title, rang the Bell in 2007, and after finishing Runner-Up at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, is one of the favourites heading into this event.

“This event gets more special every year,” Burrow said. “I couldn’t believe when I saw it’s been going for 50 years. I had a lot of fun here last year surfing at few different spots like Winki and Johanna. Everyone in the event wants to ring that Bell. I’ve got one big Bell and two small ones, so I look forward to trying to get up there again.”

Burrow will battle Adam Melling (AUS), 26, and Josh Kerr (AUS), 27, in the opening round of competition.

Owen Wright (AUS), 21, 2010 ASP Rookie of the Year, is hoping to be the first goofy-footer to win the Rip Curl Pro Bells since Mark Occhilupo back in 1998.

“The bigger the waves are the better it is for the backsiders,” Wright said. “I remember watching Occy out there when I was a grom, it was the biggest wave I’ve ever seen out here and he did 3 or 4 of the biggest turns I’ve ever seen. I think he got a 10-point-ride for it. I’d love to get some waves like that and do some turns like that.”

Wright will take on Heitor Alves (BRA), 29, and Bobby Martinez (USA), 28, in his Round 1 match at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

Owen’s sister and current No. 2 in the ASP Women’s World Title Race Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, may be a rookie on tour, but she knows Bells better than most.

“I’ve had a lot of Pro Juniors and Grom Search heats out at Bells,” said Tyler. “I don’t think you can ever really figure out Bells, but I feel good out there. There’s some swell on the way, so it’s going to be really exciting to see what goes down.”

Wright will face Coco Ho (HAW), 19, and Pauline Ado (FRA), 19, in the opening round of competition.

Coastalwatch, official surf forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, are calling for a new 3-4 foot groundswell with clean mostly offshore to begin building on Wednesday. On Thursday, a stronger building trend with wave heights increasing throughout the day before peaking at 4-6 foot on Friday, gradually easing off into the weekend, but still 3-5 foot surf until mid-next week.

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by FORD will take place at Victoria’s pristine Bells Beach from April 19 – 30, 2011 and be webcast LIVE via www.live.ripcurl.com and broadcast live on Fuel TV in Australia and ESPN in Brazil.

Running in conjunction with the women’s event, the ASP Top 34 will contest the Rip Curl Pro presented by Ford Ranger.

At the start of the contest, the waves were small and mushy, but clean enough for some good maneuvers. As the swell built from the south and the wind from the north, the guys started to get all different types of waves (typical Cali beach break). As the days went on, HB sent in some waves that gave the surfers a chance to show the crowd their stuff. Having World Tour competitors show up for this event and guys like Andino, the show was nothing less than spectacular. Starting off the event with a win in the Jr class, Kolohe saw the waves get better and a chance to really surf hard. Coming down to the finals, there were three World Tour surfers,Damien Hobgood (USA), Adriano de Souza (BRA), Taylor Knox (USA) and Kolohe went at it with some nice rides getting put down.
“I’m at a loss for words. I believed in myself, but once I actually made all of the heats, I can’t believe it. All seven surfers that I surfed against in the Finals were amazing. I never even had time to get nervous because it feels like one big heat now.” –Kolohe Andino“I knew the wave was going to be good so I just pushed my limit and got the big air, I couldn’t believe I made it. I was just flying and closed my eyes because I was so high, when I landed I thought, oh my god, I’ve completed this thing. Right at the end of the wave I did another little air and just couldn’t believe I did two good airs here in Huntington.” –Adriano de Souza on his 9.7 on Saturday“My first wave was such a nugget and I was so surprised that it was so good that I totally farmed it, I could’ve won the heat on my first two waves. When you say surfing, New York isn’t quite the first place you think of. With La Nina showing up this year, the United States has seen good swells on all 3 coasts. On 3/7/11, conditions off Long Island set up perfect for a barrel barrage. Off-shore winds and a waist-high shelf jacked up some nice A-frames, giving these surfers a big tubular playground. Without much of a crowd and the waves working like that, the cold water dosen’t seem so cold.

Tragedy struck the surfing world on Wednesday when news broke that Sion Milosky, 35 of Kaleheo, Kauai, passed away while surfing Maverick’s in Northern California. According to a report by the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Sion had caught a handful waves before he took a two-wave hold-down and apparently drowned. The report went on to state that Nathan Fletcher found Sion’s body floating about a mile from the lineup.

Sion, who began his professional surfing career as a longboarder, rose to fame in recent years when he began paddling into some of the biggest waves ever recorded. Whether it was casually slipping into Second Reef Pipe or hucking himself over the ledge on the North Shore’s outer reefs, Sion was one of the most respected individuals in the big-wave surfing scene. As friendly as he was determined, Sion’s good-natured attitude made him a friend to all.

Having found a career as a professional surfer later in life, Sion spent many of his years working as a craftsman and building gates. Proud of his blue-collar background, Sion found solace knowing that he was able to provide for his wife and two daughters by working with his hands.

After gaining traction in the surf media in 2009, Sion’s career reached a crescendo this past winter when he graced the cover of three different surf magazines and was awarded $25,000 for winning Surfing Magazine’s North Shore Underground award.

With the momentum behind him, Sion began setting out to realize his dream of paddling into the biggest waves possible. “I’m planning on going even harder now,” Sion said in a recent interview. “I want to catch the biggest wave ever.”

This weekend (3-19-11) a few familiar boys caught Rincon on an awesome barrelling day. The point kept sending perfect lines in all afternoon. Cali sun, nice long rides, rippen surfers leads to an epic day with friends.

I’m a cynic, but not without reason. I saw North Shore and Blue Crush in theaters, I’ve watched Big Wednesday on cable two dozen times, and as a kid I sat through more Gidget reruns than I should admit to publicly. What I’m getting at is I’m pretty sure I’ve seen just about every film or TV show featuring surfing that’s ever come out of Hollywood, and with the exception of Sean Penn’s iconic Jeff Spicoli, I’m always left cringing at the clunky dialog, repetitive clichés, pathetic portrayals of the actual act of riding a surfboard, and the stereotyping of surfers as one-dimensional shaka-throwers with tans as deep as the Pacific.

But when the lights went down, the film rolled, and I got used to stunning Hollywood superstars portraying people I’ve met, something unexpected happened…I started to enjoy it. The settings are spot on, with many scenes shot on the beaches of Kauai and Oahu, not in front of green screens or in locations that surfers would instinctively know aren’t Hawaiian. The surfing is possibly the best yet in a Hollywood surf film, with the real-life Bethany and Alana Blanchard doing all the surfing for their characters, and, frankly, ripping. But the real reason I found myself engaged is Bethany’s story. Attacked by a shark at a remote Kauai surf spot, she lost her entire left arm and nearly died in the process, but the shy kid has gone on to have a legit pro surf career despite her massive physical impairment, and, in the process, she’s inspired uncountable people struggling against cruel twists of fate. It seems Bethany’s story is so powerful that not even Hollywood can make it cheesy.

Sure, I felt myself blushing when Dennis Quaid (as Tom Hamilton, Bethany’s dad) is giving surf instruction, or when her toothpaste-commercial-perfect family recites passages from the Bible to each other in casual conversation, but when the credits roll alongside real footage of Bethany’s first surf after losing her arm, of her family group-hugging, and of Bethany charging Teahupoo and Jaws, even a proud cynic got a bit misty.

Soul Surfer comes to theaters April 8, 2011.
